How we assess students’ understanding in the classroom:

  • Homework and classwork is marked periodically either by teacher or during lessons and checked
  • Questioning during lessons to check for understanding
  • Written exams are given regularly and gone over in detail to improve exam technique

How we support learning:

  • Students are set into ability groups but movement between these groups is possible.
  • All groups learn the same core syllabus, receive the same assessments and sit the same tests.
  • Homework is set when appropriate and either peer marked or marked by the teacher so mistakes can be corrected. Any student requiring extra help is encouraged to speak to the teacher either at break or lunchtime
  • Students are given a user friendly check list to help them learn for their end of term test as well as practise booklets with past paper questions in the same style as the test

 How parents can support learning:

  • Making sure students have a quiet place to do revision and homework
  • Help students to be organised and come prepared to lessons with the right equipment (pen, pencil, ruler, calculator, file).
  • Encourage students to be curious about the world around them and point out when science appears in the news.
