This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, extra-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.

Curriculum music

We have a bespoke Music scheme of work for key stage 3, together with resources, which has been informed by the model music curriculum and the key stage 3 curriculum guidance.

This is at present being delivered through Music lessons in year 7 (see subject overview).

In music lessons, students are encouraged to develop their understanding of different genres of music, within their cultural context, as well as identifying varying rhythmic styles and the impact of dynamics on musical pieces.

Music lessons also give students opportunities to sing and develop their singing skills and some teachers incorporate songs into their lessons (for example in French) in order to help students remember and retain information.

All students, including those with SEND, are catered for in our lessons and they are offered the opportunity to participate and often excel.

Extra-curricular music

The school choir has regular practice sessions as well as live performances, and additional choirs are formed to perform in the school show.  There is an orchestra, for which students audition and then take part in rehearsals in preparation for live performances.

There are also small groups which gather over the weekend to sing the Friday evening prayers.

The hall has a piano and is often available for girls to play.  There are several classrooms which can accommodate in-school rehearsals, and two halls which both have stages to enable live performances. There are inbuilt sound systems to allow for background music to play to a large audience.

Our SEND students take a full part in, and sometimes lead, music activities and performances.

Part C: Musical experiences

This is about all the other musical events and opportunities that we organise, such as singing in assembly, concerts and shows, and trips to professional concerts.

Many whole school activities and assemblies incorporate music and singing, including assemblies and Bas Mitzvah celebrations.

The yearly school show offers an opportunity for all students to participate in a musical experience.

The school choir sings at monthly Rosh Chodesh prayers where the school sings Hallel together.  Each year, there is a school theme song created by one year group which is taught to the entire school.

Students are given the opportunity to record songs in a music studio for the school show and theme song..

In the future

We aim to expand our taught music curriculum across key stage 3 and, if we can attract sufficient interest, on to GCSE.

We are constantly improving our facilities and opportunities for live performances.
