  • Unit 1: Narrative Writing including the study of the short story ‘The Man With The Yellow Face’.
  • Unit 2: The Modern Novel – ‘The Pearl’. Class reading of and response to the novel.
  • Unit 3: Literary Heritage novel – Reading and response to extracts from ‘Oliver Twist’ and ‘Great Expectations’
  • Unit 4: Discursive Writing and Debating - Study of balanced argument non-fiction texts and debating.
  • Unit 5: Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’ – Reading and response to extracts from the play.
  • Unit 6: Poetry – Study of a selected poetry on the theme of migration and individual project.

  • Unit 2: Comprehension task on an extract from the novel.

  • Unit 4: Balanced argument essay on a topic of their choice

  • End of year exams focus on reading and writing skills learnt during the year.

How parents can support learning:

  • Provide access to a computer at home with appropriate software.
  • Encourage reading an appropriate range of texts, both fiction and non-fiction.
  • Support homework activities and discuss the texts studied in class.
